Kylian Mbappé ends 35-year wait to break historic France record

Kylian Mbappé etched his name into French football history after breaking a 35-year-old record during France’s international friendly victory over Brazil in the United States.

The French forward was on target as France national football team secured a 2-1 win against Brazil national football team on Thursday evening, offering a timely boost as both nations continue preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

A Record 35 Years in the Making

According to figures from Statsfoot, Mbappé has now scored in seven consecutive matches for France, becoming the first player to achieve the feat since Jean-Pierre Papin, who managed the same run between September 1990 and November 1991.

The record-breaking streak has seen Mbappé find the net against Spain and Germany in the UEFA Nations League, along with goals against Ukraine, Iceland and Azerbaijan during World Cup qualifying fixtures, bringing his total to eight goals across the seven matches.

Dominance Against Elite Opposition

His latest strike has also strengthened his position in another elite category. Mbappé now leads France’s scoring chart against top ten FIFA-ranked nations since the ranking system was introduced in 1992. With 17 goals against such opposition, he has moved clear of Zinedine Zidane, Karim Benzema and Olivier Giroud, who each recorded eight, while Youri Djorkaeff and Thierry Henry finished with seven apiece.

Dembélé and Mbappé: A Familiar Connection

The decisive moment against Brazil was made possible by Ousmane Dembélé, whose incisive first-half pass set up Mbappé’s goal. However, Dembélé’s night was cut short after he was forced off with an injury in the second half.
