Kylian Mbappe endorses Ibrahima Konate after Real Madrid free transfer move

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has strongly endorsed the club’s signing of central defender Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer from Liverpool.

Speaking ahead of France’s World Cup opening match against Senegal on Tuesday, June 16, Mbappe praised his international teammate’s aggressive style of play.

“Konate is a very aggressive defender, in the best sense,” Mbappe said. “Never a bad move, he’s tough in his marking, he wants his opponent to feel like they’re going to have a rough night. I love defenders like him on my team.”

Anfield Contract Stalemate Ends

The 27-year-old center-back agreed to a long-term contract with Real Madrid running until June 2030 after his contract at Anfield expired. Konate and Liverpool had previously been in discussions to extend his stay on Merseyside. However, those talks ultimately collapsed due to a significant financial gap between the player’s wage demands and the club’s valuation.

The French international leaves the English Premier League side after a highly successful five-year tenure. During his time with the Reds, he made 183 appearances across all competitions, helping the club secure a Premier League title, an FA Cup, and two League Cups.

Mourinho Orchestrates Defensive Overhaul

Konate’s high-profile arrival marks the beginning of a major squad overhaul at the Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid is looking to reconstruct its roster under the guidance of newly appointed manager Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese coach was brought back by club president Florentino Perez following a disappointing stretch of two consecutive trophyless seasons for the Spanish giants.

Mourinho is reportedly driving the club’s transfer window strategy to build a more resilient and physically imposing backline. Roster adjustments have already started, with Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries also signing with the club alongside Konate last week.

Focus Shifts to World Cup Opener

While the club transfer marks a major career milestone, both Konate and Mbappe have temporarily paused club concerns. The players are currently in the United States with the French national team preparing for their tournament opener.

Les Bleus will kick off their group-stage campaign against Senegal at the New York New Jersey Stadium. Mbappe’s public praise indicates that Konate is expected to play an essential role in France’s defensive unit during the tournament before he reports to Madrid for pre-season training under Mourinho this July.
