Kylian Mbappe diagnosed with left-knee hyperextension by Real Madrid

France captain Kylian Mbappe has been diagnosed with a hyperextension of the left knee and has left the national team to return to Real Madrid.

The 27-year-old forward sustained the injury during Friday’s 1-0 Nations League victory over Turkey, in which he scored the decisive goal.

Mbappe received treatment after finding the net and briefly returned to the pitch. However, he went down again moments later and could not continue. France manager Zinedine Zidane replaced him in the 58th minute of his first match in charge.

Real Madrid confirmed the diagnosis on Saturday following further examinations by the club’s medical staff.

“After the tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappe by Real Madrid’s medical services, he has been diagnosed with a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee,” the club said in a statement.

The French Football Federation had initially described the problem as a “knee tendon injury” and said Mbappe had returned to Madrid for additional assessment.

Real Madrid are due to host Villarreal in LaLiga on October 10.
