Kylian Mbappe backs Mourinho as Real Madrid target return to winning ways

Kylian Mbappe says Real Madrid are determined to put last season’s trophyless campaign behind them and return to winning major honours, with the France forward backing new coach Jose Mourinho to lead the club back to success.

Mbappe, speaking to Real Madrid’s official channel during pre-season, said the squad has the ambition and focus required to challenge for titles after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign.

The Frenchman also spoke positively about his relationship with Mourinho, praising the Portuguese coach’s experience and winning mentality.

Mbappe praises Mourinho’s winning experience

Mbappe said he was pleased to return to training and begin working with Mourinho, his new team-mates and the club’s coaching staff at Valdebebas.

“I am very happy to be back, and to get my first impressions with the team, the new coaching staff, my teammates, and everyone working at Valdebebas. It is always good to come back here and prepare for the season.”

The forward revealed that he had already communicated with Mourinho during the World Cup before continuing those conversations since returning to Madrid.

“We talked a lot during the World Cup, as well as during the past few days here. It is very positive to have a coach with this experience, who knows how to win, and knows the path we must take in order to achieve victories.”

Mbappe added: “As a player, it’s great to have a coach who knows where he’s going. I think having him is a positive thing for us.”

Real Madrid focused on strong pre-season

Mbappe believes the period before competitive matches begin provides the ideal opportunity for players to work at maximum intensity and build their fitness.

“I try to give my best, because this is the period during which we can work as much as possible.”

He continued: “When the matches start, it becomes more about managing the workload. Now is the right time to work at full strength, get the feel for it, so that we are ready for the first league match.”

The 27-year-old is looking to play a leading role as Real Madrid attempt to reclaim their place among Europe’s leading clubs after failing to win a major trophy last season.

Mbappe was emphatic when discussing the club’s ambitions for the new campaign, insisting that winning titles must remain the priority.

“I think we have to win, and I’m sure we’ll come back this year to win titles. I’m sure of it.”

The France international also promised that the squad would remain focused throughout the season in an effort to reward the club’s supporters.

“This is what we want, and it will happen because I feel the team has the desire. We will remain focused throughout the year in order to make Real Madrid fans happy, because there is nothing more important than winning titles with the team and feeling the joy of the fans.”

For Mbappe, the new campaign offers a chance to turn personal and club disappointment into success, while Mourinho’s arrival has given Real Madrid another experienced figure to guide their pursuit of silverware.
