Kwesi Appiah confident as Sudan target strong AFCON 2025 campaign
Sudan coach James Kwesi Appiah insists his team will approach the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations without fear, despite facing top-tier opponents in Group E.
Sudan share the group with Algeria, Burkina Faso, and Equatorial Guinea — three nations with proven pedigree in African football. Yet Appiah remains confident that the Nile Crocodiles can challenge any side in the tournament.
“We respect them, but we don’t fear them,” Appiah said in an interview with CAF. “If you start thinking about big names before a match, you’ve already lost mentally.
My message to the players is simple: believe in yourselves and play to show what Sudan can do. We’re here to fight, not to be extras.”
Appiah believes Sudan’s strength lies in teamwork rather than individual brilliance. He places trust in the team’s unity, work ethic, and growing confidence.
“Our strength is the collective,” he explained. “Our young players run tirelessly and learn fast.
We also have one or two players from abroad, including some from Australia, who could surprise people. Fans will discover new faces this year.”
The Ghanaian coach, who took charge of Sudan in 2023, has steadily rebuilt the team around emerging local talent.
He values discipline, structure, and mental resilience. His philosophy focuses on creating a strong team identity rather than relying on star power.
Appiah said the team’s preparation for the tournament has been carefully planned.
Sudan will compete in a regional competition in November to sharpen their form before heading to Morocco for the main event.
“We will use the Arab Cup in November as a springboard,” Appiah confirmed. “This tournament will serve as a dress rehearsal before AFCON.
We are also planning one or two friendly matches to fine-tune the team. The goal is to strengthen our connection and regain rhythm before the finals.”
Sudan’s progress under Appiah has been steady. The team now blends energetic youth with experienced leadership, creating a balance that the coach believes will surprise many at AFCON 2025.
He continues to scout players abroad, searching for talents who can fit his tactical system and adapt to Sudan’s fast-paced, collective approach.
Appiah’s confidence stems from belief in the players’ hunger and discipline. “These boys have heart,” he said.
“They train hard, listen well, and never back down. That mentality can take us far.”
Sudan’s return to the AFCON stage comes with ambition and pride. The team hopes to recreate the spirit that made them one of Africa’s early football powerhouses.
For Appiah, the mission is simple — compete, challenge, and represent Sudan with honour.
As the tournament draws near, Sudan’s focus remains clear. They aim to surprise their opponents, not by reputation, but through relentless effort and unity.
Appiah’s words capture that spirit: “We are not afraid of anyone. We will fight for every ball, every point, and every moment.”
With determination driving their preparation, Sudan step into the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations ready to prove that courage and teamwork can overcome any odds.
