Paris Saint-Germain are awaiting further tests on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia after the Georgia international suffered a worrying knee injury during Tuesday’s 4-2 Champions League win over Barcelona.
The winger was forced off in the 59th minute after a heavy collision with Barcelona player Xavi Espart at Parc des Princes. Kvaratskhelia immediately fell to the ground and appeared to be in severe pain.
Images of the incident caused concern among those close to the player, who was unable to place his foot on the ground as he left the pitch.
According to Foot Mercato, initial examinations carried out after the match were not reassuring. The outlet, citing L’Equipe, reported that people close to Kvaratskhelia are seriously concerned he may have suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.
Several members of the Georgia international’s entourage expressed their fears about that possibility on Tuesday evening. However, no definitive diagnosis has been made.
Paris Saint-Germain are yet to issue a statement and have opted to wait for the results of further medical examinations before confirming the extent of the injury.
Kvaratskhelia is due to undergo an MRI scan on Wednesday. The examination will establish the precise nature of the problem and provide a clearer indication of how long he could be unavailable.
If an anterior cruciate ligament tear is confirmed, the injury would have serious consequences for manager Luis Enrique and his team. Such an injury would keep Kvaratskhelia out for several months and place his involvement in the remainder of the season in major doubt.
