West Ham United’s forward, Michail Antonio, is making significant strides in his recovery following a severe car accident in December 2024.
The 34-year-old suffered a broken leg in the incident, which occurred shortly after his visit to Ghana in November to oversee the development of his football academy.
The Jamaican international’s Samba Stars Academy aims to provide young Ghanaian talents with a pathway to professional football, inspired by the success of players like his teammate Mohammed Kudus.
After spending over three weeks hospitalized and undergoing surgery, Antonio has been diligently working on his rehabilitation.
He recently spent time in Dubai, engaging in light training sessions to regain his fitness.
West Ham’s manager, Graham Potter, has expressed cautious optimism regarding Antonio’s progress.
Potter noted that while Antonio is not yet ready to resume full training, his time in Dubai has been beneficial.
The club is targeting a return to training after the international break in late March, emphasizing a gradual and careful approach to his recovery. “He’s recovering.
“He’s been in Dubai and it’s been good for him to get that work in. He’s not at that level of kicking a ball yet.
“It’s just a case of slowly getting back on the pitch in probably a slightly warmer environment than our training ground here in February.”
Asked about a training return, the manager added: “I wouldn’t be thinking anything this side of the international break for sure.”
During his visit in November, he expressed his desire to offer young Ghanaian players opportunities to break into leagues like the English Premier League.
