Kruger United sign former junior international Ayabulela Konqobe from Chippa United

Kruger United have signed former South Africa junior international Ayabulela Konqobe from Chippa United as they look to improve their fortunes in the Betway Premiership.

The newly promoted side remain without a win in their debut top-flight season after suffering a 4-0 defeat by Orlando Pirates at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday. Despite a competitive showing for long periods, Kruger were ultimately punished by the final scoreline.

Konqobe’s arrival provides head coach Abram Mongoya with additional defensive and midfield options as the club attempt to move away from an uncomfortable position in the Betway Premiership standings.

The transfer was confirmed by a source close to the deal, with Konqobe joining Kruger United on a one-year contract that includes an option for a further 12 months.

The former junior international had been absent from Chippa United’s match-day squad for each of the Eastern Cape club’s four matches so far this season. His move brings another experienced player into a Kruger squad adjusting to the demands of the top division.

Konqobe is expected to operate primarily at centre-back, although he is also capable of playing in midfield. His versatility is likely to be particularly useful to a side seeking its first league victory after stepping up from the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Kruger secured promotion last season after being crowned champions, finishing the campaign with 62 points and celebrating the achievement with confetti. Their transition to the top flight, however, has proved difficult, with Tuesday’s loss to Orlando Pirates leaving them still searching for their first win.

Mongoya has called on everyone connected with the club, known as the Village Boys, to remain patient and trust the process as they work through the challenges of their first season among South Africa’s elite.

Konqobe has built a career that has taken him to several clubs, including Ajax Cape Town, AmaZulu FC, SuperSport United and Ekenas IF in Finland. His move to Kruger represents another step in a journey that has included experiences at both domestic and overseas clubs.

One of his notable moments during the 2025/26 season came in March, when he scored from long range to earn Chippa United a point against Magesi FC. That strike was considered one of three contenders for Goal of the Season and could have made the judging process especially difficult.

Kruger’s next phase of the campaign will now include the presence of Konqobe, whose arrival is intended to strengthen a team still seeking stability and results at the highest level.
