Koutroulis backs Pitso Mosimane to succeed as Bafana Bafana coach

Veteran football administrator Peter Koutroulis says Pitso Mosimane’s appointment as the new Bafana Bafana head coach is the right decision, pointing to the South African’s record at club and international level as evidence that he is equipped for the role.

Speaking exclusively to the Siya crew, Koutroulis said Mosimane had already established his credentials in South Africa and abroad and should not have to convince anyone of his coaching ability.

“I think the decision to hire Pitso Mosimane is the right decision. Pitso deserves his position. He doesn’t need to prove to anyone that he is a good coach,” Koutroulis said.

Mosimane became the first South African coach to build a significant reputation outside the country, according to Koutroulis, who believes his success has helped open the way for other coaches from South Africa to work elsewhere on the continent.

“If people remember, today in Africa there are four or more coaches from South Africa working because of Pitso. Pitso was the first to go out of South Africa and make a name for himself in Africa.”

Koutroulis also highlighted Mosimane’s work with Al Ahly, before pointing to his later coaching experience in other countries, including Iran.

“He went to Al Ahly and did very well, and after that he went to other countries, including Iran, where he also did a very good job.

Local knowledge a strength

While Mosimane’s achievements outside South Africa were central to Koutroulis’ support, the administrator believes his understanding of the domestic game could prove equally important in the Bafana Bafana role.

Koutroulis said Mosimane was familiar with the country’s football culture, the mentality of its players and the expectations placed on the national team by supporters.

“And can I tell you something? I trust Pitso. He understands the South African mentality. He understands the South African football culture.

That knowledge, Koutroulis believes, makes Mosimane a natural fit for the national team position and gives him a strong foundation as he begins his tenure.

“I think he will do it well. And the supporters also, they must support Pitso. He needs support. That’s all.

Koutroulis also acknowledged that success in football depends on more than coaching ability alone, saying that fortune can play an important part in determining results.

“You know, today in soccer, you can be the best coach, but you must also have luck on your side. If you don’t have luck, this is the thing. I wish him everything of the best during his tenure.”

Mosimane’s appointment comes as Bafana Bafana prepare for the next phase under a coach who, in Koutroulis’ view, combines international experience with a detailed understanding of South African football.

The administrator’s endorsement adds to the support for Mosimane, with the former coach’s work in Mzansi, his achievements at Al Ahly and his subsequent experience in countries including Iran all cited as reasons for confidence in his appointment.
