Turkish Super Lig side Konyaspor have officially announced the signing of Nigeria international Chidozie Awaziem, adding experience and quality to their defensive ranks ahead of the new season.

The 28-year-old centre-back has joined Konyaspor on a two-year contract, becoming one of the club’s key acquisitions as they seek to strengthen their squad for the challenges of the 2026/27 Turkish Super Lig campaign.

Awaziem arrives in Turkey with a wealth of experience gained across multiple leagues and countries, having built a career that has seen him feature for clubs in Portugal, France, Spain, Croatia, the United States and Turkey.

His signing is expected to provide Konyaspor with leadership, defensive stability and valuable international experience as the club aims to improve its standing in the Turkish top flight.

The Nigerian defender first rose to prominence after emerging through the ranks at Portuguese giants FC Porto. His performances with Porto showcased his potential as a strong, composed and technically gifted defender, earning him opportunities to compete at a high level in European football.

Over the years, Awaziem has enjoyed a well-travelled career, representing several clubs across different countries. Following his time at Porto, he went on to play for FC Nantes in France, Çaykur Rizespor and Alanyaspor in Turkey, CD Leganés in Spain, and Boavista FC in Portugal.

His journey also took him to Croatia with HNK Hajduk Split before he later moved to Major League Soccer, where he represented FC Cincinnati and Colorado Rapids.

That extensive experience across various football cultures and tactical systems has helped shape Awaziem into one of Nigeria’s most seasoned defenders. Known for his physical strength, aerial ability and calmness in possession, he has consistently demonstrated the qualities required to perform at a high level.

His return to Turkish football is unlikely to present major adaptation challenges given his previous spells in the country. Having already played for both Rizespor and Alanyaspor, Awaziem is familiar with the demands, intensity and style of the Turkish Super Lig.

For Konyaspor, this familiarity could prove invaluable as they seek an immediate impact from the defender. The club’s management will be hoping that his experience can help solidify the backline and provide greater defensive consistency throughout the season.

Beyond his club career, Awaziem has also been a regular figure for the Nigerian national team. The defender has represented the Super Eagles in major international competitions and remains one of the country’s most reliable defensive options whenever called upon.

His arrival is therefore viewed as a significant boost for Konyaspor, who have secured a player with proven quality at both club and international level.

The Turkish side also confirmed that Awaziem will wear the No. 15 jersey during his time at the club. The shirt number will accompany him into what promises to be another important chapter in a career that has already taken him across several continents.

As preparations continue for the new campaign, Konyaspor supporters will be eager to see their latest signing in action. With his experience, versatility and leadership qualities, Awaziem is expected to play a crucial role in the team’s ambitions this season.

For the Nigerian defender, the move offers a fresh opportunity to showcase his abilities in a familiar environment and add another successful chapter to a career that has been defined by adaptability, resilience and consistent performances at a high level.
