Khvicha Kvaratskhelia fires Paris Saint-Germain towards rare scoring landmark

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put Paris Saint-Germain ahead against Aston Villa and extended the French side’s scoring sequence to 29 consecutive matches in all competitions in the UEFA Super Cup in Salzburg, Austria, on Wednesday.

The Georgia international opened the scoring after 20 minutes. He collected the ball on the edge of the Aston Villa penalty area, moved inside and struck a powerful shot which found the net.

The goal continued a remarkable run for Paris Saint-Germain, who have now scored in each of their past 29 matches across all competitions. According to Squawka, it is the club’s longest scoring sequence since July 2020.

Paris Saint-Germain’s current run is still short of the 36-match sequence they recorded at that time. The team therefore needs to score in seven more consecutive games to equal that recent club record.

The last occasion on which Paris Saint-Germain failed to score came on 12 January, when they were beaten 1-0 by neighbours Paris in the Coupe de France. Since then, they have found the net in every match, with Kvaratskhelia helping to maintain that run against Aston Villa.

The goal also underlined Kvaratskhelia’s strong form in European competition. Squawka says the 24-year-old has now contributed to 11 goals in his past nine European matches.

During that sequence, the Paris Saint-Germain forward has scored eight goals and provided three assists. His latest finish came as Paris Saint-Germain sought to build on their domestic and European dominance at the start of a season in which they are aiming to continue that success.

Kvaratskhelia received the ball outside the penalty area before taking the initiative himself. After driving towards the centre, he created the space for a firm finish that Aston Villa could not keep out.

That strike gave Paris Saint-Germain an early advantage in the UEFA Super Cup and ensured the club’s scoring record remained intact. It also moved them closer to a landmark that has not been matched by the team since the 36-game sequence completed in July 2020.

For Aston Villa, the goal meant they had to respond after falling behind in the 20th minute. For Paris Saint-Germain, it represented another step in a streak that has continued since their 1-0 defeat by Paris in the Coupe de France on 12 January.

With seven matches still needed to match the 36-game run, Paris Saint-Germain’s next fixtures will determine whether they can reach the club’s longest scoring sequence of recent years. Kvaratskhelia’s latest contribution has kept that possibility alive while adding to his increasingly influential record in European football.
