After spells in the Premier League and Scotland, followed by a return to Switzerland, Kevin Mbabu is set to make his mark in the Bundesliga. The 24-year-old Swiss international has signed a four-year contract with VfL Wolfsburg and will leave Young Boys at the end of the current season. While the transfer fee has not been officially disclosed, it is expected to be around 10 million Swiss francs, excluding potential bonuses. Mbabu, of Congolese (DRC) descent, has committed to Wolfsburg until June 2023.
A Swiss international since September, Mbabu has earned four caps for his country. This season, he made 19 appearances in the Swiss Super League and five in the Champions League, contributing three assists. His contract with Young Boys was due to expire in a year, making the move to Germany a timely step in his career.
Mbabu began his professional journey at Servette FC, leaving the Swiss club at 17 to join Newcastle United. After loan and permanent spells in England, as well as a stint with Glasgow Rangers, he returned to Switzerland in 2016, initially on loan to Young Boys before making the transfer permanent in 2017. At Young Boys, the right-back quickly established himself as a key figure, helping the club secure two consecutive league titles in 2018 and 2019.
His consistent performances at club level earned him a call-up to the Swiss national team, where he has been a regular since last autumn. With his move to VfL Wolfsburg, Mbabu is set to test himself in one of Europe’s top leagues, aiming to continue his development and make an impact both domestically and internationally.
