Algerian defender Kévin Guitoun targets World Cup return after Charleroi form
Algerian defender Kévin Guitoun believes his recent form at Royal Charleroi has put him back in contention for a place in the national team squad for the 2026 World Cup.
After a mixed 2024–2025 campaign with FC Metz, the right-back has rediscovered consistency during his loan spell in Belgium, where he has become a regular starter for Charleroi.
His recent performances have been particularly notable, contributing two assists and a goal across the club’s last two matches.
Guitoun’s resurgence has been aided by a tactical adjustment, with the 27-year-old occasionally deployed further up the pitch as a right winger.
The positional change has allowed him to showcase his attacking qualities, while maintaining his defensive reliability.
Reflecting on the shift, he told DH: “It’s not an unfamiliar position for me, but it’s true that I feel more comfortable as a right-back, where I’ve always played.”
His improved form has reignited ambitions at international level. Having not featured for Algeria since September 2025, Guitoun is now targeting a return to the squad ahead of the World Cup in North America.
“With what I’m producing, I must be close. I think I deserve to go to the World Cup. The squad will be announced around May 20th. The closer the date gets, the more we think about it. It’s an extra motivation ,” he confided.
Despite his confidence, competition for places remains intense within the Algeria setup under head coach Vladimir Petkovic. Since Guitoun’s last appearance, several players have strengthened their positions in the squad.
Rafik Belghali and Samir Chergui have both established themselves as regular options, while Achref Abada also impressed during the most recent international window in March, featuring at right-back in friendly matches.
This increased competition presents a significant challenge for Guitoun as he attempts to reclaim his place.
However, his current form at club level ensures he remains a viable option should changes be required.
With the squad announcement approaching, Guitoun’s performances for Charleroi could yet influence selection decisions.
For now, he continues to focus on maintaining his level, aware that consistency will be key in keeping his World Cup hopes alive.
