Kenya midfielder William Lenkupae has revealed conversation with new coach Benni McCarthy before switching allegiance to play for the Harambee Stars.
The 23-year-old, who plies his trade for Australian outfit Central Coast opted to represent Kenya at the expense of Australia at the international level.
Lenkupae, born and raised in Australia was eligible to represent Kenya through his parentage and Australia as well.
Following talks with McCarthy, the talented midfielder felt Kenya was the right choice for him and was included in the team for the fifth and sixth rounds of the World Cup qualifiers.
“I spoke to the coach, and he put a good idea in my head. I thought this is perfect for me. I’ve always been in touch with this place,” Lenkupae said.
The 23-year-old made an instant impact on his debut against Gambia, coming on as a second-half substitute and scoring a dramatic last-minute equalizer to secure a 3-3 draw.
“It was an amazing achievement for myself. A dream come true. My family in Australia and my family here were all happy. It’s a moment I will always cherish,” he said.
“My father’s here, my uncle’s here, and I’ve always had that connection. I knew this was going to be a great team, and I’m grateful to be part of it.”
Kenya’s qualification to the biggest soccer mundial now hangs in the balance following their 2-1 home defeat to Gabon on Sunday in the sixth round.
