Kenya intensify preparation ahead of World Cup qualifiers

Kenya have stepped up their training ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Gambia and Gabon this month.

The Harambee Stars will travel to Ivory Coast to face Gambia on March 20 before hosting Gabon at the Nyayo National Stadium on March 23, 2025.

They are currently fourth in Group F, accumulating five points after four matches into the qualifying series. Kenya will be hoping to revive their qualification chances under new manager Benni McCarthy.

The former Manchester United assistant coach recently signed a two-year deal to lead the Kenya national team until 2027.

Benni McCarthy will be eyeing a flying start to his stint with the Kenya national team.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Bajaber, one of the local players to have made the cut for the qualifiers has shared insights into McCarthy’s approach.

“We need young blood—young players with fresh legs,” Bajaber said. “The coach believes in us, and even if not now, in the future, these young stars will represent the nation.”

“Training has been good—intense—and the coach has ambition, which is a good thing. He’s always clear about his expectations, and I believe the future looks bright for Kenya.”
