Kenya held by Eritrea in opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier

Kenya were held to a 1-1 draw by Eritrea in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match, having fallen behind before half-time.

The Harambee Stars, managed by Benni McCarthy, conceded at home on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of Group D, despite already qualifying for the tournament as co-hosts.

Eritrea made the stronger start and took the lead in the 36th minute through Girmai. Kenya were unable to respond before the interval and went into half-time trailing.

The hosts improved after the break, applying sustained pressure as they sought to recover from their unexpected setback. Their efforts eventually produced an equaliser in the second half, ensuring both sides took a point.

It was an even contest overall, with Eritrea’s performance underlining their renewed ambitions in the competition. The two teams will now prepare for the next round of matches in October.
