Former Black Stars player and coach, Charles Kwablan Akonnor, has officially been unveiled as the new head coach of Kenyan football giants, Gor Mahia FC.
Akonnor, 52, has signed a two-year contract with the club as preparations intensify ahead of the upcoming season.
He will be joined on the technical bench by fellow Ghanaian Bismark Kobby-Mensah as assistant coach, while Ben Owu takes charge of the goalkeepers.
In a statement shared on the club’s social media platforms, Gor Mahia expressed confidence in their new appointment: “We are delighted to announce the appointment of Charles Akonnor from Ghana as our new Head Coach. The former Black Stars manager brings a wealth of experience as a seasoned tactician. Welcome to Mahia, Coach Akonnor.”
The club, a record holder in the FKF Premier League, is banking on Akonnor’s rich coaching résumé and international exposure to restore its dominance both domestically and on the continental stage. Akonnor has previously handled top Ghanaian sides including Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, Dreams FC, and AshantiGold SC.
This marks his first managerial assignment outside Ghana, as Gor Mahia aims to rebuild following a challenging season and make a strong impression in upcoming CAF inter-club competitions.
