Kenya’s Harambee Stars suffered a narrow defeat in their opening FIFA Series fixture, losing 5-4 on penalties to Estonia at Amahoro Stadium in Rwanda on Friday, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

The result marks Kenya’s first setback in the tournament, with the squad now turning attention to upcoming fixtures as part of their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations preparations.

The match began at a cautious pace, with both sides feeling each other out. Kenya initially dominated possession, pushing high up the pitch, but struggled to carve out clear-cut opportunities.

Estonia, adopting a compact defensive approach, absorbed the early pressure and struck first against the run of play. From a right-wing move that led to their first corner, Kristo Hussar’s delivery found Tanel Tammik, who rose above the defenders to head Estonia ahead.

Kenya’s response was immediate but fraught with frustration. Midfielder Richard Odada was booked for a clumsy challenge in the 30th minute, while Job Ochieng’s powerful strike was parried away by goalkeeper Andre Karl Vallner despite an offside flag.

Injury forced Ochieng off before halftime, with Ben Omondi taking his place. Debutant Zech Obiero had a golden chance before the break but failed to beat Vallner, leaving Kenya trailing 1-0 despite dominating possession.

The second half saw Kenya start brighter, and the breakthrough came in the 55th minute. A slick sequence of passes culminated in Obiero feeding Ryan Ogam, who calmly chipped the goalkeeper to level the score. Kenya continued to press, putting Estonia under pressure, but could not find a second goal.

Tactical substitutions followed: Austin Odhiambo, Erastus Erambo, and Lawrence Ouma replaced Obiero, Omar, and Wilson, while Estonia responded with Alex Matthias Tamm and Markus Soomets.

The match proceeded to a tense penalty shootout. Kenya opened the scoring through Odhiambo, but misses from Richard Odada and Mohammed Bajaber ultimately swung the advantage to Estonia, who converted all five of their spot-kicks.

Despite the disappointment, Harambee Stars showcased promising attacking patterns and defensive resilience, offering lessons ahead of the AFCON preparations.

The FIFA Series, approved by the FIFA Council in December 2022, brings together 48 national teams across 12 groups and is designed to enhance competitive opportunities globally.

Kenya, along with co-hosts Uganda and Tanzania, will use this tournament as a key step toward the 36th Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled from June 19 to July 18, 2027.

This performance, while ending in a narrow defeat, provides Harambee Stars with valuable match experience and tactical insights as they prepare to compete on the continental stage.
