Mohamed Hussein, the newly appointed president of the Football Federation of Kenya (FKF), is faced with his first challenge in naming a new coach for the national team, Harambee Stars, following the resignation of Engin Firat.
The Turkish international stepped down with over two years remaining on his contract, citing unpaid salaries.
Hussein, addressing the media alongside his deputy, McDonald Mariga, confirmed the resignation and expressed his desire to focus on other matters, such as the federation’s manifesto, but had to prioritize addressing the coaching vacancy.
“We have started the process of filling the avoid and we hope to conclude this as soon as possible as we want a strong show in the CHAN and also prepare well for forthcoming Afcon campaigns,” Hussein said.
During Firat’s tenure, Kenya failed to qualify for AFCON 2025, finishing third in their group. Additionally, the country faces pressure to complete renovations of Moi International Stadium, Kasarani, and Nyayo Stadium in time for the upcoming CHAN tournament, with uncertainty about their readiness.
