Kenya coach Benni McCarthy sets bold ambition for Harambee Stars
Newly appointed Kenya head coach Benni McCarthy has vowed to transform the Harambee Stars into the most formidable team in East Africa, making a bold pledge to the nation’s football fans.
The former South African international, who took charge of the national team last month, is stepping into his first managerial role at the international level.
Despite this being his debut assignment with a national squad, McCarthy has set high expectations for his tenure.
“I want Kenya to become the best team that East Africa has ever seen. If we can strengthen the national team, Kenya will progress significantly,” the 47-year-old told Mozzart Sports.
“For me, the most important thing is the passion on the faces of the people. It’s clear that they love their country and their football. However, the national team has not yet met their expectations.”
A Coaching Career on the Rise
McCarthy arrives in Kenya with an impressive coaching background, having previously managed two clubs in his native South Africa—Cape Town City and AmaZulu.
During his tenure at these clubs, he demonstrated his tactical expertise and leadership, earning recognition for his ability to develop competitive teams.
His coaching journey also includes experience in European football. Before moving to Kenya, McCarthy served as an assistant coach at Belgian club K Sint-Truiden VV.
Most notably, he was part of the coaching staff at Manchester United in the English Premier League, where he worked closely with the club’s attacking players.
His knowledge and experience from working at one of the world’s biggest clubs are expected to bring a fresh perspective to Kenya’s national team.
Kenya’s Road to Improvement
The Harambee Stars have struggled to assert themselves on the continental stage, often failing to match the success of some of Africa’s top footballing nations.
Kenya’s inconsistent performances in regional and international competitions have left fans longing for a breakthrough moment
