Kenyan athletes are up in arms over the recent announcement by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) regarding its intention to impose taxes on their income, including winnings earned abroad. This development has triggered discontent among a group of athletes, prompting them to consider a boycott of all international competitions. The dissenting athletes convened a meeting in Eldoret, the heart of national athletics, to express their opposition to this decision.
Wesley Korir, the victor of the Boston Marathon two years ago, voiced concerns, stating, “The money we earn is not in regular amounts, and if the government taxes us, it will take us up to five years to recover.”
This is not the first time such taxation issues have arisen. Back in 2012, several Kenyan athletes, including David Rudisha and Abel Kirui, received tax notices for arrears totaling millions of dollars.
