Marumo Gallants coach Ronnie Kanalelo believes his side can repeat last season’s Carling Knockout shock when they face Mamelodi Sundowns in the first round on Tuesday.
Gallants knocked Sundowns out at the same stage of the competition last season before progressing to the final, where they were beaten 1-0 by Orlando Pirates at Peter Mokaba stadium.
The result remains a source of belief for Kanalelo, despite Gallants’ difficult start to the current league campaign. They are bottom of the table after eight matches without a win, but the coach insists their previous success proves Sundowns can be beaten.
“So basically, what we are saying is that Sundowns are beatable, and as long as they are beatable – it has happened before in the past in the said competition. That’s what we are looking at,” said Kanalelo.
“We are not going into this game handing it over on a silver platter – we are going to work for it, and they are also going to work for it. That’s the only thing I know.”
Sundowns will arrive with confidence after recently winning the MTN8 title, but Kanalelo says his players will not be overawed by their opponents’ form or reputation.
He also warned that any complacency from the Brazilians could work in Gallants’ favour.
Kanalelo previously played for Sundowns and won titles with the club in the late 90s. However, the 55-year-old says his current responsibilities leave no room for divided loyalties.
“That’s where my loyalty is. We’re not even talking about Sundowns; I was a footballer there. I did my work, and they were paying my salary,” he said.
“I then moved from there. I am in a different space; I’m wearing a different hat, which also pays my salary, and I must give them my full service and provide what the club wants, which is results.”
Gallants came close to claiming the Carling Knockout trophy in 2025, but Orlando Pirates secured a 1-0 victory in the final at Peter Mokaba stadium.
Kanalelo believes there is no reason his team cannot take the final step this time, despite their league struggles.
The coach is therefore targeting another upset against Sundowns as Gallants begin their latest Carling Knockout campaign, with last season’s victory offering evidence that the underdogs can again challenge one of the competition’s strongest sides.
