Kalidou Koulibaly names Rüdiger, Huijsen, and Van Dijk as his toughest opponents
Kalidou Koulibaly has revealed the three toughest defenders he faced during his time in European football, highlighting their strength, skill, and mentality.
Speaking to influencer Zack Nani on the show En roue libre, the Senegalese international reflected on his years competing at the highest level across Serie A and the Champions League.
Koulibaly, who now plays for Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal, shared insights from his encounters with Europe’s elite during his peak years at Napoli.
He expressed admiration for players who combine defensive solidity with technical intelligence.
“I’m going to put Rüdiger in because he’s a true defender,” Koulibaly said. “These days there aren’t many defenders who can completely shut down attackers, and I like that kind of defender.”
The 34-year-old praised German international Antonio Rüdiger for his fierce approach and leadership, qualities that remind him of traditional centre-backs who thrived on physical duels and aggression.
Koulibaly also named Dutch star Virgil van Dijk among his toughest opponents, citing the Liverpool captain’s composure and positional awareness as standout traits.
“Van Dijk reads the game so well. His calmness under pressure and timing in challenges make him one of the best,” he added.
The Senegalese defender surprised many by including Dutch youngster Dean Huijsen in his list. Koulibaly acknowledged the teenager’s potential, particularly his ability to distribute the ball and dictate play from the back.
“Huijsen is good at distributing the ball,” he explained. “He has confidence and maturity beyond his age.”
Throughout his career, Koulibaly earned a reputation as one of Europe’s finest defenders, celebrated for his strength, tactical intelligence, and leadership.
His years in Italy with Napoli saw him battle against the best forwards in world football, experiences that shaped his appreciation for defensive excellence.
Now starring for Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League, Koulibaly continues to bring his trademark composure and authority to the pitch while serving as an inspiration for younger African players aspiring to reach Europe’s top leagues.
His comments reflect his deep respect for opponents who embody both defensive discipline and modern football intelligence — qualities Koulibaly himself has long been admired for.
The interview offered fans a rare glimpse into the mindset of one of Africa’s most accomplished defenders, a player who built his career on consistency, humility, and respect for the art of defending.
