Kaizer Chiefs weigh coaching crossroads as two front-runners emerge
Kaizer Chiefs are edging closer to a defining decision over their technical leadership ahead of next season, with internal discussions increasingly centred on who will take charge of the next phase of the project.
The Soweto giants are currently weighing whether to maintain elements of their existing structure or embark on a full reshuffle aimed at refreshing the dugout.
Two prominent figures have already surfaced as early favourites for the role, shaping the direction of early planning.
Uncertainty continues to surround Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef, who currently form part of the technical team. Latest indications point to Kaizer Chiefs being unlikely to extend their contracts, as the club leans towards restructuring its coaching setup.
Even so, there remains a possibility that both could be retained in a revised capacity rather than as lead figures. The final decision is expected to determine whether continuity or a clean break defines the next phase.
Should Kaizer Chiefs proceed with appointing a new head coach, Manqoba Mngqithi has quickly positioned himself as a leading candidate.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor is understood to be highly regarded within discussions around the club’s future structure, with proposals reportedly considering a blended technical model. In that scenario, Mngqithi would take the lead role while Kaze and Youssef could remain within the broader setup.
“Based on reliable information, those two coaches are staying,” respected Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates insider Innocent Mkhize said on X.
“The plan at Kaizer Chiefs is to add one senior figure to the technical team, with Manqoba Mngqithi currently top of the list,” he added. His extensive domestic success and tactical experience continue to strengthen his appeal.
Alongside Mngqithi, Pitso Mosimane also remains firmly in the conversation. The highly decorated coach is currently unattached and has previously indicated openness to taking charge at Kaizer Chiefs.
His track record across domestic and continental competitions keeps him among the most respected figures on the continent. However, despite ongoing speculation, there has been no formal approach or official offer made to him by the club at this stage.
Ultimately, the responsibility now rests with the Kaizer Chiefs hierarchy to define the direction of their next project.
