Kaizer Chiefs target Richards Bay breakthrough after venue switch

Kaizer Chiefs will face Richards Bay at Princess Magogo Stadium on Wednesday, with the change of venue offering Amakhosi a fresh opportunity to end their long wait for an away victory against the Natal Rich Boyz in the Betway Premiership.

The match had originally been scheduled to take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium, but it will now be played in KwaMashu. The switch gives Fernando Da Cruz’s side a different backdrop as they attempt to overcome a difficult recent record in this fixture.

Chiefs have found Richards Bay particularly challenging in recent seasons, with their away meetings in KwaZulu-Natal producing little success. Two of those matches were held at King Zwelithini Stadium, while another took place at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex.

The most recent encounter between the clubs came in March, when Richards Bay secured a 2-0 win over Chiefs. That result extended Amakhosi’s frustrating run against their opponents and underlined the difficulty of this contest, regardless of the teams’ respective form.

Wednesday’s game presents Chiefs with the chance to begin a different chapter. Although the venue has changed, the assignment remains clear: leave Durban with three points and finally end their away hoodoo against Richards Bay.

Chiefs have made a positive start to their Betway Premiership campaign. They have collected seven points from their first three matches, following victories over Kruger United and Sekhukhune United with a 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns.

That unbeaten opening has given Da Cruz encouragement during the early stages of his time in charge. The Chiefs manager has shown a willingness to adapt tactically, while the emergence of Langelihle Phili has added further attacking threat to his squad.

Phili, 21, scored against Mamelodi Sundowns and also impressed in Chiefs’ early-season victories. His performances provide another reason for Amakhosi to approach Wednesday’s fixture with confidence as they look to maintain their strong start.

Richards Bay, however, have yet to win in the league this season. The Durban-based club have taken two points from their opening three matches and will be determined to use home advantage, despite the relocation from Moses Mabhida Stadium to Princess Magogo Stadium.

Their recent record against Chiefs means form alone may not determine the outcome. The Natal Rich Boyz have repeatedly demonstrated that previous results and league standings can matter little when these teams meet.

Richards Bay will therefore be seeking to turn their own early-season frustration into a response against one of South Africa’s biggest clubs. Chiefs, meanwhile, will hope the unfamiliar surroundings can help them avoid another disappointing trip and translate their encouraging start into a significant result.

With Richards Bay still searching for their first league victory and Chiefs unbeaten after three matches, Amakhosi have an opportunity to address a persistent problem. A win would not only strengthen their position near the top of the Betway Premiership but also allow them to put their difficult record against Richards Bay behind them.
