Kaizer Chiefs sign Azam captain Bitegeko in historic Tanzanian first

Kaizer Chiefs have made history by signing Azam FC captain Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko, the first Tanzanian footballer ever to join the Soweto giants.

The 27-year-old defensive midfielder arrives from Tanzanian heavyweights Azam FC for an undisclosed fee, becoming Chiefs’ third acquisition of the current transfer window under new coach Fernando Da Cruz.

Bitegeko follows defender Tabo Moloisane and goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner through the door as Amakhosi continue a major squad rebuild.

In a statement confirming the deal, the club said: “Kaizer Chiefs have secured the services of Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko from Tanzanian giants, Azam FC for an undisclosed fee, following successful negotiations between the two Clubs.”

First Tanzanian to wear famous gold and black

Chiefs underlined the significance of the move, noting that Bitegeko is breaking new ground for his country at Naturena.

“The 27-year-old defensive midfielder, who was captain at Azam, becomes the first player from Tanzania to join Amakhosi. His arrival adds to the impressive list of players from over 20 different African countries who have worn the famous Gold & Black jersey,” the club stated.

The signing extends Chiefs’ long-standing strategy of recruiting talent from across the continent, with players from West, Central, East and Southern Africa having previously represented the club. Bitegeko’s arrival now adds Tanzania to that list, underlining the growing footprint of the South African game in East Africa.

Scandinavian experience boosts Chiefs’ midfield

Chiefs have also highlighted Bitegeko’s extensive experience in European football as a key attraction.

“Mtasingwa brings valuable experience, having spent six seasons in Scandinavia, playing in the Icelandic, Norwegian and Finnish leagues. He returned home in 2024 to help Azam FC finish third in the Tanzanian league last season,” the club said.

His spell in Scandinavia exposed him to physically demanding and tactically disciplined leagues, attributes Amakhosi will hope he can bring into the heart of their midfield as they aim to re-establish themselves among the dominant forces in the South African Premier Division.

As a defensive midfielder, Bitegeko is expected to add steel and structure in front of the back line, an area that has been a concern in recent seasons as Chiefs have struggled to consistently challenge for major honours.

National team leader joins the Glamour Boys

Bitegeko also arrives with international pedigree, having been entrusted with a leadership role for his country.

“The Tanzanian international has filled the role of vice-captain for his national team. We warmly welcome Adolf to the family and wish him success on his journey with the Glamour Boys,” Chiefs added.

His leadership background at both club and national level suggests he will be expected not only to compete for a starting berth, but also to contribute to a changing dressing-room culture under Da Cruz.

With three new signings already secured and more movements expected before the transfer window closes, Chiefs are signalling clear intent to reshape their squad.
