Kaizer Chiefs reaffirm faith in Fernando da Cruz after continental exit

Kaizer Chiefs have backed head coach Fernando da Cruz and his technical team after their early CAF Confederation Cup elimination, insisting the result will not alter the club’s long-term football strategy.

The Amakhosi were knocked out by Zambian side Red Arrows in the preliminary round after the tie ended 1-1 on aggregate. Red Arrows won the resulting penalty shootout 3-2.

Chiefs had secured a 1-0 victory in the second leg at Moses Mabhida Stadium, with Bradley Cross scoring the decisive goal, but the failure to advance has led to questions about the club’s continental ambitions.

In a statement released on Saturday, sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the result while urging supporters to maintain a broader perspective.

“As a club, we would like to reaffirm our full support for, and confidence in, the head coach and the entire technical team. They continue to have our trust as they lead the implementation of a football philosophy and development pathway that we firmly believe will bring sustainable success,” he said.

Motaung Jr also defended the players and staff, saying their professionalism, work ethic and commitment to improvement remained beyond reproach despite the elimination and injuries within the squad.

Chiefs have made a difficult start to the 2026/27 campaign, with their early departure from the CAF Confederation Cup adding to the challenges they face as they attempt to build on last season’s Nedbank Cup triumph.

The sporting director said the club would not allow disappointment in one competition to determine its wider direction. He argued that lasting success depended on consistency, resilience and a clearly defined sporting plan.

“We have made significant progress in key areas of our sporting project, and while setbacks are a natural part of any ambitious journey, they do not alter our conviction in the direction we are taking,” he said.

The club will review its performances and identify areas for improvement, but Motaung Jr said Chiefs remained committed to their playing identity and long-term objectives.

His statement signals that the club is not considering an immediate change to its technical leadership, despite frustration among supporters following the Confederation Cup exit.

Motaung Jr recognised that disappointment and thanked the club’s supporters for their continued backing, while calling for unity during a challenging period.

“Now is the time for unity, not division. We believe in the work being done, we believe in the people leading that work, and we believe the foundations being laid today will deliver the success our supporters deserve,” he said.

Chiefs will now refocus on domestic competition, where Da Cruz and his technical team will be expected to turn the club’s long-term vision into stronger performances and results on the pitch.
