Kaizer Chiefs quartet included in South Africa’s provisional 2026 World Cup squad
Four Kaizer Chiefs players have been rewarded for their impressive performances this season after being named in Hugo Broos’ provisional South Africa squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, defenders Thabiso Monyane and Bradley Cross, as well as experienced midfielder Lebohang Maboe, were all included in the provisional squad announced by Broos ahead of the tournament in North America.
The inclusion of the four Amakhosi stars highlights the club’s resurgence after an improved campaign in the PSL, where several Chiefs players consistently delivered strong performances. Broos, who has often overlooked Chiefs players in recent years, appears to have been convinced by the quartet’s form and growing influence within the squad.
Petersen’s call-up comes after a remarkable season between the posts. The goalkeeper established himself as one of the league’s standout shot-stoppers, producing several match-winning displays and keeping numerous clean sheets for Chiefs. His performances reignited discussions about a possible national team return, especially after he missed earlier international assignments through injury.
Bradley Cross also earned recognition following a consistent campaign at left-back. The defender has impressed with his defensive solidity, energy, and ability to contribute in attack, making him one of the most reliable performers in the Chiefs setup this season.
Thabiso Monyane’s inclusion is another notable development. The right-back has adapted well since joining Chiefs and has shown maturity and tactical discipline throughout the campaign. His performances have strengthened Chiefs defensively while also giving them added width going forward.
Meanwhile, Lebohang Maboe’s return to the national team fold marks a major comeback for the experienced midfielder. Maboe, who last featured for Bafana Bafana in 2021, has rediscovered his form this season with composed and polished displays in midfield. His creativity, experience, and versatility are expected to provide Broos with additional options ahead of the World Cup.
The preliminary squad is dominated by players from Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, but Chiefs’ four representatives underline the progress the Soweto giants have made this season.
Broos is expected to trim the provisional squad before announcing his final selection for the tournament later this month as South Africa prepare for their return to football’s biggest stage.
