Kaizer Chiefs prepare for Stellenbosch test as Pirates and Sundowns contest MTN8 final

Kaizer Chiefs return to Betway Premiership action on Tuesday with Luke Baartman’s fitness uncertain, while attention across South African football remains focused on Saturday’s MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns in Durban.

Baartman is being assessed by the Kaizer Chiefs medical team after the youngster was forced off shortly before half-time in South Africa U23’s 1-1 friendly draw with Algeria over the weekend.

His injury makes him a doubt for Chiefs’ meeting with Stellenbosch FC, as Fernando Da Cruz’s side resume their league campaign following a three-week break for the FIFA international window.

The pause has provided time for Chiefs to prepare away from the spotlight. With Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns dominating the build-up to their final at Moses Mabhida Stadium, the Naturena club have worked quietly ahead of a demanding return to competition.

Chiefs have made a promising start to the Betway Premiership season and currently occupy fourth place with 13 points from seven matches. A win against the Cape Winelands club at the Calabash next week would keep them close to the top of the table.

Stellenbosch FC sit seventh on nine points and arrive seeking greater consistency in their own campaign. They are led by Gavin Hunt, a manager with extensive knowledge of Naturena.

Tuesday’s fixture begins a particularly busy period for Chiefs. Their schedule will include league commitments, a two-legged CAF Confederation Cup tie against Zambian club Red Arrows and the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates.

The continental tie will begin at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on 17 October, with the return match scheduled for Moses Mabhida Stadium on 23 October.

Chiefs will then face Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby on 31 October, bringing another high-profile fixture at the end of the month.

Before those matches, however, their immediate focus is on Stellenbosch FC and the potential availability of Baartman. Chiefs’ league position gives them an opportunity to remain among the leading sides, but they face a Stellenbosch team looking to stabilise its season.

The match also marks the end of Chiefs’ extended period away from domestic action, with the club now entering a run of fixtures that will test the depth of Da Cruz’s squad across domestic and continental competition.
