Kaizer Chiefs extended their perfect start to the DStv Diski Challenge season with a 1-0 victory over Richards Bay FC at Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday.
The match was goalless at half-time before youth international Keitumetse Lesia scored the only goal of the game after the interval. The result gives Chiefs three wins from three matches and leaves them alone at the top of the table.
Richards Bay FC, known as the Natal Rich Boys, suffered their second consecutive defeat.
Mamelodi Sundowns recovered from their heavy loss to Kaizer Chiefs by beating Kruger United 3-0 at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.
Simphiwe Mlondo put Sundowns ahead in the first half, while Lehlohonolo Mahlangu and Sechaba Gaseitsiwe added further goals after the break to secure maximum points for Masandawana in Atteridgeville.
The defeat was another setback for debutants Kruger United, who had also lost to fellow newcomers Milford FC the previous week.
Orlando Pirates, the defending champions, endured another difficult result as they were beaten 2-1 by Siwelele FC at the UJ Soweto Campus.
Pirates appeared to be recovering after their convincing win over Stellenbosch FC last weekend and took the lead when Junaid Vlotman headed in before half-time.
Siwelele turned the match around in the second half, with Lucky Muthewi and Lebohang Mobe scoring to give the home side all three points.
Golden Arrows produced the biggest win of the round, defeating Chippa United 9-2 at Chatsworth Stadium.
Abafana Besthende led 5-1 at the interval after dominating from the opening stages. They continued to attack after the break, with Kwandile ‘Diego’ Gumede scoring five times and Minenhle Mbatu completing a hat-trick.
AmaZulu surrendered top spot after being held to a goalless draw by TS Galaxy at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in Mpumalanga. Both sides had won their opening two matches, but neither could find a breakthrough as they shared the points.
Two-time champions Stellenbosch FC recorded their first victory of the campaign by overcoming Polokwane City 2-1 at Idas Valley Stadium.
Jordan Mack gave Stellenbosch the lead before the interval. Polokwane City, who had yet to win after a heavy defeat by defending champions Orlando Pirates, pushed for a response, but the Maroons held on.
Marumo Gallants also claimed their first win, beating Milford FC 4-2 away at Princess Magogo Stadium. Milford could not build on their first victory, achieved at home against Kruger United a week earlier.
Sekhukhune United returned to winning form with a 2-0 victory over bottom side Durban City at the UJ AW Muller Stadium.
Ayabonga Mokgalaka opened the scoring midway through the first half before Makhosini Mathebula struck early in the second to secure the points. It was a third successive defeat for Durban City, while Sekhukhune moved into the top five.
