South Africa: Lebohang Maboe urges Kaizer Chiefs to respond as pressure grows after slide in league standings

Midfielder Lebohang Maboe has urged Kaizer Chiefs to rediscover their form as the team faces mounting pressure following a drop in the Betway Premiership standings.

The Soweto club began the season strongly and spent several weeks among the league’s leading teams. However, a recent run of disappointing results has seen them slip to sixth place with 30 points from 18 matches.

The decline has triggered frustration among supporters, with some fans organising a protest march towards the club’s headquarters in an effort to draw attention to their concerns about the team’s performance.

Maboe acknowledges supporters’ frustration

Amid the growing tension, Maboe addressed the situation and recognised the expectations that come with representing one of South Africa’s most prominent football institutions.

“It’s a big institution and a lot is expected of us. I understand where the frustration comes from, but we’re all fighting for a common goal, which is to bring back the glory days,” he said.

The midfielder added that the squad’s immediate objective is to restore confidence among supporters and improve the mood around the team.

According to Maboe, the players remain united in their determination to change the current trajectory and deliver results that will satisfy the club’s demanding fan base.

Crucial home match approaching

The opportunity to halt the recent decline comes this weekend when Kaizer Chiefs host Durban City at the FNB Stadium.

The match is expected to present a significant challenge, as Durban City arrive with strong momentum after recording two victories and a draw in their last three games.

“We know we’re facing a motivated team,” said Maboe, who previously represented Mamelodi Sundowns and Maritzburg United earlier in his career.

Focus shifts to results on the pitch

Despite the difficult run of form, supporters have continued to attend matches in large numbers, a factor Maboe believes should motivate the team to respond.

For the midfielder, the challenge now is to translate determination into performances on the field.

“We say we want to turn things around; now we need to put those words into action. It has to start on Sunday,” the midfielder concluded.
