Kaizer Chiefs were held to a 1-1 home draw by Stellenbosch FC, extending their run to five draws in their last six league matches and leaving them without maximum points for a third consecutive game.
The hosts began with greater intensity, pressing Stellenbosch high and forcing the visitors to spend much of the opening stages in their own half. Chiefs, however, struggled to turn that pressure into clear chances and did not seriously test goalkeeper Sage Stephens.
Stellenbosch created the first significant opportunity after 21 minutes. Sinoxolo Kwayiba struck the post with a right-footed effort from the centre of the box after being picked out by an excellent pass from Quwan Plaatjies.
Stephens then kept Stellenbosch level in the 30th minute, making an important save to deny Wandile Dube after the forward had been presented with a clear one-on-one opportunity. The goalkeeper was called upon again three minutes later, this time stopping Inacio Miguel from close range.
Chiefs became increasingly physical as they attempted to regain control, with Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Thabo Moloisane both receiving yellow cards before half-time.
The response from Gavin Hunt’s side after the interval was immediate. Stellenbosch took the lead two minutes into the second half when Kwayiba finished after receiving a fine assist from Terrence Mashego.
Chiefs restored parity in the 57th minute through Mdududzi Shabalala. Reeve Frosler sent the ball forward and Shabalala controlled it well before beating Siviwe Nkwali and firing towards the near post, where his effort beat Stephens to make it 1-1.
The match remained open as both teams pushed for a winner. Each side brought on attacking players during the substitutions, with Flavio Silva returning for Chiefs after a two-month absence. Hunt also introduced Bradley Grobler, who is chasing the PSL record.
Neither team could find a decisive second goal, and referee Sikhumbuzo Gasa brought the contest to an end with the points shared. Stellenbosch left with a point from their away fixture, while Chiefs were held for the third league game in succession.
Kaizer Chiefs will now turn their attention to the CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round, where they face Zambian side Red Arrows over the weekend.
Stellenbosch FC will next host Chippa United in Cape Town.
