Kaizer Chiefs forward Ashley Du Preez set to join Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch FC are reportedly exploring a move to bring former star forward Ashley Du Preez back to the Cape Winelands, with the attacker believed to be on the verge of leaving Kaizer Chiefs after a frustrating campaign.
Du Preez’s future at Naturena has become increasingly uncertain following a season in which he struggled for game time and failed to make the impact many expected. The speedy forward featured in fewer than five Betway Premiership matches during the campaign, a significant decline for a player who was once regarded as one of Chiefs’ most dangerous attacking weapons.
The difficult season has not gone unnoticed by the player himself. Du Preez recently acknowledged on social media that he endured a disappointing campaign and fell short of the standards he had set for himself.
His honesty has only fueled speculation that a change of scenery could be on the cards as he looks to rediscover the form that earned him a move to one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.
Stellenbosch are now believed to be monitoring the situation closely and could offer the forward an opportunity to return to the club where he first established himself as a top-flight talent.
Du Preez joined Kaizer Chiefs from Stellenbosch four years ago after impressing with his pace, direct running and ability to trouble defenders. His performances in the Cape Winelands made him one of the most sought-after attacking players in the country and convinced Amakhosi to invest in his services.
Under coaches Gavin Hunt, Arthur Zwane and Molefi Ntseki, Du Preez enjoyed encouraging spells and showed flashes of the quality that had made him such an exciting prospect. His speed and work ethic made him a valuable option in attack, and there were periods when he looked capable of becoming a key figure for the club.
However, injuries, inconsistency and increased competition for places gradually affected his progress. Over time, his influence within the squad diminished, and the recent season proved to be his most challenging since arriving at Chiefs.
Now, a return to Stellenbosch could offer the ideal platform for the forward to rebuild his confidence and revive his career.
The Western Cape club has earned a reputation for developing players and helping them maximize their potential. Returning to a familiar environment could allow Du Preez to play with greater freedom while benefiting from a system that previously brought out the best in him.
For Stellenbosch, the potential acquisition would represent a low-risk move for a player whose qualities are already well known within the club. Despite his recent struggles, there remains a belief that Du Preez possesses the attributes needed to become a valuable contributor once again.
The club is also expected to strengthen several areas of its squad ahead of the new season, and adding an experienced attacker with knowledge of the league could prove to be an important piece of their plans.
Meanwhile, Chiefs appear set for another period of squad restructuring as they prepare for the upcoming campaign. The departure of Du Preez would mark the end of a four-year association that promised much but ultimately failed to deliver the consistency both the player and supporters had hoped for.
As discussions continue behind the scenes, all signs point towards a reunion between Du Preez and Stellenbosch. Should the move be finalized, it would offer the striker a chance to return to familiar surroundings and remind South African football of the talent that once made him one of the country’s most exciting attacking players.
