Kaizer Chiefs find hope in young debutants

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze took encouragement from the club’s youngsters despite ending the season with a 1-0 loss to Chippa United at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The match gave senior debuts to goalkeeper Takalani Mazhamba and midfielder Pheko Phago, and Kaze said their performances showed real promise for the future.

Kaze admitted Chiefs were wasteful early on and lacked calm in key attacking moments, but he felt the younger players handled the pressure well. He also said the team improved after halftime and created several chances, even though they could not find an equaliser.

Speaking after the game, Kaze said, “First of all, I believe that we started the match while on the front foot. We had a couple of opportunities to put ourselves in better conditions by scoring, but we couldn’t,” and later added that the youngsters “did pretty well” and are “the beginning of better things and trophies in the future”.

Chiefs ended the campaign on 54 points and had already secured CAF Confederation Cup qualification before their final two matches.
