Kaizer Chiefs confirm Moses Mabhida Stadium for R6.6m Confederation Cup tie
Kaizer Chiefs will host Red Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium in the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second qualifying round tie on Friday, October 23, with kick-off scheduled for 18h00.
The Zambian club will stage the opening leg at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday, October 17. The venue is 330km from Red Arrows’ usual home at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka, which does not meet CAF requirements.
The fixture confirmation has also led to a change in Chiefs’ domestic schedule. Their league match against Stellenbosch, originally due to take place at FNB Stadium on October 23, has been brought forward to October 13. The changes had previously been reported.
The winner over the two legs will qualify for the Confederation Cup group stages, where the minimum prize money is USD400 000 (approximately R6,6 million).
That amount is paid by CAF to the teams that finish third and fourth in their respective groups. The group stage is scheduled to run from November 27, 2026, until January 24, 2027.
Chiefs face a congested schedule
Moses Mabhida Stadium is one of the alternative home venues listed for AmaKhosi this season, alongside Royal Bafokeng and Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Chiefs last played at the Durban venue in May, when they were beaten by Chippa United. They have also been required to host Siwelele at Dobsonville Stadium.
With the Confederation Cup tie taking place over the weekend of October 23/25, Chiefs’ Carling KnockOut first-round match would have to be played in midweek, only a few days before the Soweto derby on October 31.
Another possible date is November 4, after the PSL postponed all matches originally scheduled for that day.
Should Chiefs reach the Carling KnockOut quarter-finals, they would have to fulfil that fixture before the November FIFA international window, which runs from November 9-17.
A return to the Confederation Cup group stages would add three continental matches before Christmas. Those games would affect Chiefs’ scheduled away fixtures against Chippa United on November 28, Milford on December 5 and Marumo Gallants on December 18.
The demands on the league calendar would increase further in January, when three successive weekends have been set aside for CAF inter-club matches.
As a result, the matches against Durban City on January 10, Sekhukhune United on January 17 and Chippa United on January 23 would all need to be rearranged.
