Kaizer Chiefs captain Petersen targets MTN8 success as season springboard

Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen says winning the MTN8 could provide the ideal platform for the club’s new season as they prepare to face Golden Arrows in Sunday’s quarter-final at FNB Stadium.

Chiefs return to South Africa’s premier knockout competition after missing the previous two editions. Fernando Da Cruz’s side are eager to make an immediate impression as they begin their campaign against a Golden Arrows team entering a new era under head coach Pitso Dladla.

The Glamour Boys qualified for this season’s MTN8 after improving their league position last term. They now have the opportunity to challenge for the first trophy of the new campaign, with only three victories standing between them and the title.

Speaking at the MTN8 launch in Randburg earlier this week, Petersen said the significance of returning to the competition had already created extra motivation within the Chiefs squad.

“To be back in the MTN8, I think that’s motivation on its own because we know how it felt to not be part of it, and I think that alone set the tone for us,” Petersen said.

Chiefs were absent from the previous two editions, making qualification a notable achievement for the club and its players. Petersen believes their renewed involvement has made the route to silverware feel both clear and immediate.

“It shows us that it’s there now. It is within reach for us. It’s four games, and I think the most important one is the weekend. That first hurdle, that first step, and that’s Golden Arrows.”

The captain also sees the MTN8 as more than an opportunity to add a trophy. He believes a strong start could influence Chiefs’ performance across the rest of the campaign, including their efforts in the Betway Premiership and CAF Confederation Cup.

“I think for us it is important to hit the ground running, to make sure we set the tone for the season,” he said.

“I mean you win this trophy it sets the tone for the season. So I think that’s a thinking for us, that’s a goal to try and go all the way in this tournament and make sure we set a nice foundation for us to carry us for the rest of the campaign.”

Golden Arrows will provide the first test of Chiefs’ progress under Da Cruz. The match comes after an encouraging pre-season and an active transfer window, offering an early indication of whether Amakhosi can translate those preparations into competitive form.

Their opponents are also beginning a fresh chapter. Dladla has taken charge after guiding Durban City to a top-eight finish and success in the Nedbank Cup last season.

For Chiefs, the immediate task is to clear the first obstacle. Victory on Sunday would take them one step closer to MTN8 glory and leave them two wins away from lifting the trophy, while also giving the team the confidence they hope can support a stronger season on several fronts.
