Kaizer Chiefs escape suspension blow ahead of Soweto derby

Kaizer Chiefs have received a major boost ahead of Saturday’s Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates after taking precautionary measures to ensure key defenders Inacio Miguel and Thabo Moloisane remain available for the high-profile encounter.

The club’s 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Cup Round of 32 provided the technical team with an opportunity to manage the risk of suspensions ahead of the eagerly anticipated derby.

Miguel was left out of the squad for the cup encounter after accumulating yellow cards, with the coaching staff keen to avoid any possibility of losing the centre-back for the clash against their bitter rivals.

The decision proved significant, as the defender is expected to be an important figure in Kaizer Chiefs’ defensive setup against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium.

Moloisane was also carefully managed during the victory over TS Galaxy. The defender, who was similarly at risk of suspension, featured for most of the match before being substituted late on for Zitha Kwinika to prevent him from receiving another booking.

The precautionary changes mean Kaizer Chiefs can approach the Soweto derby without losing either defender through suspension, providing the coaching staff with greater flexibility when preparing for one of South African football’s biggest fixtures.

However, the club still have other players who must be cautious. Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Pule Mmodi and Sifiso Hlongo are reportedly one yellow card away from suspension, having each accumulated two bookings.

With emotions expected to run high, disciplinary control could play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the derby. Kaizer Chiefs will be eager to maintain their defensive stability against an Orlando Pirates side equally determined to claim bragging rights.

The availability of Miguel and Moloisane represents an important boost for Amakhosi as they prepare for Saturday’s showdown, where victory would deliver more than just three points — it would provide a major psychological lift in one of African football’s fiercest rivalries.
