Kabelo Nkgwesa in line for second Chiefs chance against Sundowns

Kaizer Chiefs teenager Kabelo Nkgwesa could be handed another opportunity to establish himself when Amakhosi face Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The 19-year-old made his senior debut in Chiefs’ victory over Sekhukhune United on Wednesday, stepping into the first team at a time when the club are without two recognised left-backs.

Bradley Cross and Paseka Mako are both unavailable through injury, leaving Reeve Frosler as the main option on the left side of defence. That situation could open the door for Nkgwesa to feature again as Chiefs prepare for a considerably more demanding test against Sundowns.

Nkgwesa made a positive first impression on his senior bow and was clearly proud to have reached the first-team stage. He said the occasion was significant not only for him, but also for his family, loved ones and management.

The defender may now have to show his readiness once more against Masandawana, who will provide a much tougher examination than Sekhukhune United.

Frosler remains available to play at left-back, but with Cross and Mako still sidelined, new coach Fernando Da Cruz must decide whether to retain the more experienced option or give Nkgwesa another chance to continue his introduction to senior football.

For the teenager, the immediate priority is to make the most of every opening that comes his way. His appearance against Sekhukhune represented the first step of his senior career, and Saturday’s fixture could provide an early opportunity to build on it.

The match also comes as Chiefs continue to manage their defensive options while dealing with the injuries to Cross and Mako. Nkgwesa’s ability to deputise at left-back has therefore arrived at an important moment for the club.

Having fulfilled his ambition of making his first-team debut, the young defender now faces the possibility of a swift return to the Chiefs side, with a high-profile meeting against Sundowns potentially serving as his next test.
