Juventus open Europa League with five-goal win as Celtic suffer home defeat

Juventus began their Europa League campaign in emphatic fashion with a 5-0 victory over Dutch visitors Nijmegen at Allianz Stadium.

Nicolas Gonzalez put the Italian side ahead after only nine minutes, and Karim Alajbegovic doubled their advantage in the 24th minute.

Juventus were awarded a penalty 11 minutes later, with Nick Woltemade converting in the 35th minute to give the hosts a commanding 3-0 lead at half-time.

The pressure continued after the interval and Zeki Celik added a fourth goal in the 75th minute. Randal Kolo Muani completed the scoring seven minutes later to seal a dominant opening win for Juventus in the league phase.

Elsewhere, Celtic were beaten 3-1 at home by Hungarian side Ferencvarosi in a result that left the Scottish club facing a disappointing start to their campaign.

Ferencvarosi went in front in the 20th minute after Celtic defender Liam Scales turned the ball into his own net.

Celtic responded just before half-time when Mika Bauer equalised in the 44th minute. Their parity lasted only briefly, however, as Kristoffer Zachariassen restored Ferencvarosi’s lead in first-half stoppage time.

The visitors extended that advantage two minutes after the restart, with Daniel Arzani scoring their third goal.

Egyptian forward Haytham Hassan started for Celtic before being substituted in the 57th minute, but the home side could not find a way back into the match.

Besiktas beat Marseille

Besiktas also made a winning start, overcoming Marseille 4-1 on home soil.

The Turkish club took the lead in the 15th minute through Ilhan Fakili, but Marseille drew level after 30 minutes when Kylian Abdallah found the net.

Besiktas moved back in front in the 56th minute, with Vaclav Cerny scoring their second goal.

The hosts added another three minutes later as Michael Murillo made it 3-1, before Ernest Poku completed the victory in the 81st minute.

The result gave Besiktas a convincing home win, while Marseille were unable to respond after falling behind for a second time.
