Jurgen Klopp clears the air on Mohamed Salah transfer decision at Liverpool

When Mohamed Salah arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2017, expectations were modest.

Few could have predicted how quickly he would become the club’s most dangerous attacking force.

What followed was a remarkable nine-year spell that firmly silenced early doubts about him being a one-season wonder.

At the time of his signing, reports suggested Jurgen Klopp had other preferences, with then-Bayer Leverkusen winger Julian Brandt often mentioned as the manager’s top target. The narrative gained traction among fans and media, raising questions about whether Salah was truly Klopp’s first choice.

Now, following confirmation that Salah will leave at the end of the season, Klopp has addressed those claims directly. Speaking to The Anfield Wrap, the German coach pushed back on the long-standing belief.

“There is always a story that I wanted to sign Julian Brandt or someone like that,” Klopp said.

“The situation with that is if you go for a winger, you talk to seven or eight.

“Yes we spoke to him, but we spoke to Salah. Whatever people think, I don’t care, but in the moment we were convinced he was the one, more convinced than he was in that moment. Maybe inside he was.”
