Junior Adamu signs long term deal with Schalke

FC Schalke 04 have officially completed the signing of Austrian forward Junior Adamu from SC Freiburg, handing the 25-year-old a contract running until 2029 as they reshape their attack for the coming seasons.

The nine‑cap Austria international arrives in Gelsenkirchen after spending the second half of last season on loan at Celtic, where he celebrated a domestic double with league and cup titles.

Schalke highlight Adamu’s work rate, flexibility and willingness to press as key reasons behind the move, seeing him as a player who fits their future style of play. “With Junior, we’ve gained a player who perfectly fits our playing style. He works hard off the ball and offers his teammates passing options with his deep, quick runs. Junior is a team player who can showcase his strengths in several attacking positions and in different systems,” explains Schalke’s Director of Professional Football, Youri Mulder.

Adamu, born in Kano, Nigeria and raised in Austria, came through the RB Salzburg system and built his reputation with Salzburg, Liefering and on loan at St. Gallen before joining Freiburg in 2023.

Reflecting on his decision, he said the trust from Schalke’s hierarchy and the clear game idea convinced him to choose the tradition-rich club and its passionate fanbase for the next chapter of his career.
