Julian Alvarez target prompts Barcelona delegation trip to Madrid

Barcelona have taken a significant step in their attempt to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, with sporting director Deco and his assistant Joao Amaral travelling to the Spanish capital on Tuesday to advance negotiations.

The Argentine striker, 26, is Barcelona’s leading target for strengthening their attack this summer, and the club has now begun pursuing the deal more forcefully. According to Mundo Deportivo, Deco and Joao Amaral made the journey to Madrid with the aim of making progress on an agreement for Alvarez.

Barcelona regard the forward as their preferred attacking addition and believe his desire to leave Atletico Madrid could help them reach a deal. However, Atletico remain firmly opposed to allowing the player to move to Barcelona.

That resistance has so far represented the main obstacle to the proposed transfer. Despite Alvarez’s reported wish to join Barcelona, Atletico have maintained their position against his departure. Barcelona’s latest visit is therefore viewed as an attempt to accelerate discussions and explore whether the impasse can be broken.

A meeting between Deco, Joao Amaral and Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, is expected to take place in the coming hours. The talks are intended to assess the situation surrounding the striker and Barcelona’s prospects of completing the move.

Alvarez remains under contract with Atletico Madrid until 2030. Barcelona are nevertheless hopeful that the player will make another gesture to demonstrate his determination to leave the club and move to Camp Nou.

The Catalan club’s interest is centred on Alvarez’s status as their priority target for the attack. Their belief that the player wants the transfer has encouraged them to intensify their efforts, even though Atletico’s refusal remains unchanged.

Tuesday’s delegation, led by Deco, represents the clearest indication so far that Barcelona are prepared to become directly involved in trying to move the negotiations forward. The club will now wait to see whether the meeting with Hidalgo and any further indication from Alvarez can create room for an agreement.

For the moment, Atletico’s stance continues to prevent the transfer from progressing. Barcelona’s hope is that the player’s own position, combined with the discussions in Madrid, will eventually persuade the club to reconsider its opposition.
