Julian Alvarez seeks to ease Atletico tension after defeat at Athletic Club

Julian Alvarez made an unexpected approach to Atletico Madrid supporters after their 3-0 defeat by Athletic Club, joining his team-mates in front of the travelling fans at San Mames in an apparent attempt to calm tensions surrounding him.

The Argentina forward had been jeered by about 200 Atletico supporters who made the trip to Bilbao. Their reaction followed several days of uncertainty during the transfer window and continued attention on Alvarez’s future with the club.

Unlike in Atletico’s previous match against Villarreal, Alvarez did not keep his distance from the visiting supporters after the final whistle. Instead, he walked towards the stands alongside his team-mates to acknowledge the fans and thank them for travelling to support the side.

The gesture came after a difficult evening for Atletico, who suffered a heavy defeat without scoring. It also followed a period in which Alvarez had faced growing tension around his position at the club, with the transfer-window events contributing to the hostile reception at San Mames.

Alvarez had been accompanied by Cuti Romero and Juan Musso from the time Atletico’s squad arrived at the stadium. The two players also stayed close to him during the warm-up before the forward came on in the 58th minute.

Musso, in particular, offered visible support to Alvarez as the match developed. The forward entered the game with his team-mates clearly behind him, even as the atmosphere around his appearance remained tense.

When Alvarez was substituted, he was met by further whistles from the Atletico supporters. He chose not to confront them or respond angrily. Instead, he returned to his team-mates before later joining them as the squad went over to salute the travelling fans.

That decision allowed Alvarez to avoid a direct confrontation after the final whistle and created an opportunity to repair relations with Atletico’s supporters. The forward’s response was notable because it came after both the poor result and the criticism directed towards him from the stands.

The scene at San Mames offered a marked contrast to what happened after the Villarreal fixture. On this occasion, Alvarez deliberately took part in the team’s acknowledgement of the fans, despite the 3-0 defeat and the jeers that had accompanied his substitution.

His actions appeared designed to draw a line under the immediate tension and begin a fresh relationship with the Atletico supporters, although the uncertainty surrounding his future had been central to the events of the previous days.
