Julian Alvarez seeks face-to-face with Gil Marin as Atletico future hangs in the balance

Julian Alvarez has asked for an urgent meeting with Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin as the dispute over his future continues, despite the Argentina striker returning to training with the club this week.

Alvarez’s position has not changed after an initial conversation with Atletico manager Diego Simeone, according to Spanish newspaper Sport. The forward believes his time with Atletico Madrid has come to an end and remains determined to find a way out of the club during the current summer transfer window.

Barcelona continues to be Alvarez’s preferred destination, with the Catalan club described as his dream move.

The disagreement goes beyond comments made by Alvarez during the World Cup. People close to the player say he is disappointed by Atletico’s stance because he believes the club has failed to honour a commitment made to him several months ago.

Information published in recent weeks indicated that Gil Marin had promised Alvarez in February that Atletico would help facilitate his departure if a suitable offer arrived. Barcelona subsequently placed €100m on the table, but Atletico Madrid refused to enter negotiations.

Alvarez then decided to make his desire to leave public. During the World Cup, he said: “The best thing for everyone is to move on.” He also made clear that he wanted to fulfil his ambition of joining his preferred club.

Those remarks prompted a firm response from Gil Marin, who said Atletico Madrid had no intention of giving up their rights to the player.

Alvarez and Simeone discuss the situation

Alvarez’s return to Madrid has not altered the disagreement. He has explained his position to Simeone, while the Atletico manager has told him that he remains part of his plans for the season ahead.

The conversation was described as amicable, but the two men continue to hold opposing views. Alvarez wants to leave, whereas Simeone hopes to keep relying on him.

Atletico Madrid has also maintained a clear public position. The club is not considering surrendering its stance or negotiating Alvarez’s departure, and believes the Argentine should apologise for his comments before returning his focus to football and training.

The club has also referred to Antoine Griezmann as an example of how a relationship with supporters can be rebuilt.

Contrary to reports circulating in recent hours, Alvarez has not apologised to his team-mates or expressed regret to them over making his intentions known to the media, ESPN reported. His position therefore remains the same as it was when he spoke during the World Cup.

Request for talks with club chief

The immediate priority for those close to Alvarez is to arrange a meeting with Gil Marin. TyC Sports reported that they have requested talks with Atletico’s chief executive in an effort to resolve a dispute that threatens to continue into the final weeks of the transfer window.

Alvarez wants to remind Gil Marin of the commitment he says was made before the disagreement became public. From the player’s perspective, he has fulfilled his part of that understanding and cannot understand why Atletico Madrid has now changed its position.

Until that meeting takes place, Alvarez’s future remains unresolved, with the striker seeking a departure and Atletico continuing to insist that he should stay.
