Julian Alvarez returns to Atletico training amid Barcelona transfer speculation

Julian Alvarez has returned to Atletico de Madrid training as uncertainty continues over his future, with Barcelona monitoring the situation and preparing to decide whether to make an improved offer for the Argentina forward.

Alvarez took part in Monday’s session as Atletico began preparations for the new season. He trained alongside Marcos Llorente, Alex Baena and Juan Musso, although the club said the four players would follow a specific individual programme over the coming days before joining the rest of the squad.

The forward’s return comes at a potentially decisive stage in the transfer situation. Alvarez is understood to remain determined to leave Atletico this summer and, according to Spanish reports, is expected to formally inform the club’s board of his wishes.

Mundo Deportivo reports that Atletico continue to oppose selling the player, maintaining the position they have previously made clear. The club have not indicated that they are prepared to negotiate his departure at this stage.

Alvarez has previously expressed a desire to move to Barcelona, either indirectly or in earlier conversations, although he did not explicitly name the Catalan club in those comments.

Barcelona are waiting for developments after making an initial offer for the 28-year-old. The club are ready to submit a new proposal if Atletico agree to begin negotiations, but the Spanish side’s continued refusal could leave the final decision with Alvarez.

The situation could become increasingly tense if the player and Atletico maintain opposing positions. Reports in Spain suggest the possibility of a dispute between the two parties if neither side changes its stance.

Atletico manager Diego Simeone was absent from Monday’s training session after being given time off. As a result, a planned meeting between the manager and Alvarez has been postponed until further notice, according to Spanish reports.

Barcelona want to settle the matter in the coming days, either by completing a deal for Alvarez or by turning their attention to another option. The Catalan club are seeking to strengthen their attack and see the Argentina international as a possible replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

Alvarez joined Atletico in the summer of 2024 and is under contract with the club until the summer of 2030. He has made 66 appearances for Atletico, scoring 25 goals and providing eight assists.

Atletico finished last season in fourth place with 69 points. They will begin their league campaign this season against Malaga on Wednesday, 19 August.
