Jules Kounde says his reduced playing time for Barcelona this season is a consequence of performances that fell below his own standards last term.
The France defender has endured a difficult start to the campaign. After establishing himself as a key member of the Barcelona side, Kounde is no longer an automatic first choice for manager Hansi Flick.
“These are Hansi Flick’s decisions,” Kounde said at a news conference. “I feel very good physically and I do not have any injury.”
Kounde accepted that his limited involvement was connected to his performances last season, which he acknowledged were below the level he expects from himself.
“If I am playing less, it is linked to last season, which was well below my standards,” he said.
“I accept that completely, and it is also a challenge for me. I will have to work, and that is what I usually do.”
The 26-year-old said he understood that improving his form would be the route back into the team.
“I have to get back to my best level,” he added. “I know that when I am at my best, I will get playing time.”
Kounde also outlined the demanding routine he has adopted in an effort to raise his performance levels.
“I wake up at 07:00 and train three times a day,” he said. “That has become my routine to improve my performances.”
Kounde has played in five of Barcelona’s eight matches this season, accumulating 261 minutes.
