Al Ahly Appoint Juan Carlos Garrido as New Head Coach
Al Ahly have confirmed the appointment of Spanish coach Juan Carlos Garrido as their new first-team manager following their recent success in the Egyptian Premier League.
The North African giants secured their 37th league title — and eighth consecutive crown — earlier this week, cementing their domestic dominance. Shortly after, the club announced Garrido’s signing on a two-year contract reportedly worth €70,000 per year.
Garrido takes over from interim manager Fathi Mabrouk, who stepped in following the departure of Mohamed Youssef. Youssef had a highly successful spell, guiding Al Ahly to their eighth African Champions League title last year and leading the team to the Club World Cup in Morocco.
The 45-year-old Garrido brings a wealth of European coaching experience. He first gained recognition during his time at Villarreal CF, where he led the Spanish side to a remarkable fourth-place finish in La Liga in the 2010-11 season, alongside a deep run to the Europa League semi-finals. More recently, he managed Real Betis during the 2013-14 campaign.
Garrido’s appointment signals a new chapter for Al Ahly as they aim to build on their domestic and continental successes. His first competitive match in charge will be the Egyptian Cup quarter-final clash against Al-Rajaa this Thursday.
The club’s hierarchy expressed confidence that Garrido’s tactical acumen and experience in European football will help maintain Al Ahly’s winning momentum and further their ambitions on both the domestic and international stages.
