JS Kabylie prospect Slimane Tichtich faces decisive season after injury setback
Slimane Tichtich’s pace has already marked him out as one of JS Kabylie’s most intriguing young players, but the Algeria winger must now turn that promise into consistent senior performances after a hamstring injury interrupted his progress.
The 20-year-old, born on 23 June 2006, had begun to establish himself towards the end of last season. He was given more playing time by JS Kabylie and scored his first Ligue 1 Mobilis goal against Ben Aknoun on 1 April.
His breakthrough was checked a few weeks later when he suffered a hamstring injury during a match against Olympique Akbou. A recurrence in a training game then brought that encouraging first spell in senior football to an early end.
Tichtich’s route to the JSK first team had been a gradual one. He was spotted in Skikda by Arezki Remmane before joining the FAF Academy in Sidi Bel Abbes. From there, he moved on to JS Kabylie, where his most obvious quality has quickly become clear: when he carries the ball at speed, he is capable of forcing defenders to retreat.
That attribute has also caught the attention of Karim Belhocine, who took charge of JS Kabylie this summer. The manager has been impressed by the winger’s energy and willingness to remain involved in matches, although Tichtich’s physical development is still considered a work in progress.
His acceleration with the ball is currently the defining feature of his game. It allows him to attack space behind a defence, while also giving him the tools to take on opponents when play becomes congested. Belhocine has also valued the fact that Tichtich does not always try to add another dribble before bringing an attack to an end.
Belhocine, however, is only beginning to get to know the player. He was not involved in the earlier stages of Tichtich’s development or the circumstances that preceded his arrival at JS Kabylie.
Rabah Bensafi has a longer view of the winger’s progress. The former JSK manager took over the side after Josef Zinnbauer’s departure, with 10 matches remaining in the previous campaign, and used that period to give several young players greater responsibility.
Tichtich was among those given an opportunity. Bensafi first introduced him against MC Alger before selecting him in the starting line-up against Ben Aknoun. That decision produced Tichtich’s first goal in Ligue 1 Mobilis, an important milestone for a player who had previously struggled to move ahead of more experienced forwards in the squad.
The momentum did not last, however, because of the hamstring problems that followed.
For Bensafi, pace alone will not be enough to secure a lasting place at senior level. The former coach believes Tichtich must improve his finishing and become more effective after creating an opening. Beating an opponent or disturbing the defensive shape is only the first part of the move; converting that advantage into a goal or final pass is the next challenge.
The tactical side of his game is also still developing. Bensafi has further highlighted the need for greater physical preparation, arguing that the transition into senior football demands a stronger individual commitment to muscular development.
The former JSK coach, who now works with Paradou’s young players, said he had not identified any behavioural problems in Tichtich or the other youngsters he promoted.
The winger’s task for the 2026/27 season is therefore straightforward. His speed and ability to eliminate defenders have opened the door to senior football, but they will not, by themselves, keep him there.
His immediate priority is to recover fully from the hamstring setback without another recurrence and then build a sustained run of matches. Only through that continuity can the qualities recognised by Belhocine and Bensafi develop from an exciting promise into reliable senior impact.
This article is part of the #TalentsAlgeriens series, which follows 25 young players to watch in Ligue 1 Mobilis this season. The selection is subjective and reflects not only natural ability but also potential, expected involvement at club level and the role the 2026/27 campaign could play in each player’s development. A focus on Abdelaziz Kahia is also available as part of the series.
