Josh Acheampong weighs future as Chelsea game-time frustration grows

Josh Acheampong’s situation at Chelsea is becoming delicate, with the young defender understood to be increasingly frustrated by his lack of minutes in the first team.

Despite that, the club still rate him extremely highly, consider him “untouchable”, and would be very reluctant to let him leave unless he actively pushes for a move.

Reports suggest figures within Acheampong’s camp are already creating some tension behind the scenes as they push for more opportunities, which risks turning the matter into an uncomfortable issue at Stamford Bridge. Last season, the 20-year-old made 30 appearances in all competitions, but only featured in 17 Premier League games, starting eight, a level of involvement he and his entourage feel does not match his potential.

Acheampong’s journey to this point has been rapid. He signed his first professional contract with Chelsea on 3 January 2024, was first named in a Premier League matchday squad against Newcastle on 11 March, and made his debut on 2 May 2024, coming on late in a 2-0 win over Tottenham at Stamford Bridge.

After a spell out of the squad while contract extension talks were resolved, he finally made his full debut against FC Astana in the UEFA Conference League on 12 December 2024. Now, his next step depends on whether Chelsea can convince him he will play regularly.
