Al Ahly head coach Jose Riveiro is facing mounting pressure after his side’s 2-0 defeat to reigning African champions Pyramids FC on Saturday night in the Egyptian Premier League.
The “Club of the Century” had managed just one victory in their opening three league fixtures prior to the clash, and the latest setback has intensified calls from supporters for Riveiro’s dismissal.
Pyramids forward Walid El Karti struck twice, once in each half, to secure victory and hand Al Ahly their first loss of the season.
The result leaves the Cairo giants languishing in 12th place on the table after four matches.
Reports in Egypt suggest the club’s board convened an emergency meeting immediately after the defeat to review Riveiro’s position.
The Spanish manager, who joined Al Ahly on a two-year contract from Orlando Pirates, has already come under criticism for failing to guide the team beyond the group stage of the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States earlier this year.
With the team struggling for consistency both domestically and internationally, Riveiro’s future at Al Ahly appears increasingly uncertain.
